Cataclysm Stat Changes for Boomkin

I’m not even going to attempt to summarize all that Eyonix posted today on the stat changes. I VERY HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU to go read it. The stat changes discussed at Blizzcon relating to Cataclysm have been detailed for us. Some stats are going to remain on gear and in some cases, be altered. Some stats are going to be removed from gear but remain as an attribute of your character.

And some things are disappearing altogether, like MP5, Defense, Spell Ranks, and Weapon Skill.

Please, please, go read the post. All this information is pretty overwhelming right now, and I know I can not do it the sort of justice it deserves.

Instead, I want to list the specific changes they mentioned in regards to moonkin

If you are a Balance druid or Elemental shaman:

  • You will still share gear with Restoration druids and shaman.
  • Your gear will have Spirit on it. It won’t have Hit on it.
  • You will have a talent that converts Spirit to Hit. We will adjust talents accordingly so that you want about as much Spirit as, say, a warlock wants Hit.
  • Hit on rings and other such gear will still benefit you.
  • Raid buffs will no longer boost Spirit, so you shouldn’t find yourself unexpectedly over the Hit cap because of buffs.

As it is, we’re occasionally picking up restoration pieces either because they’re the best choice for the moment (as in the case of my helm being an upgrade until I get the tier piece. /sigh) or because they’re just the best choice. We cringe sometimes at the spirit on the item, but what are we to do? There’s only so much caster leather to go around, you know.

Now there won’t be resto leather versus balance leather–we will all be wearing the same gear, the stats will just change to accommodate us. Obviously, I’m not a mathematician, and I also have pretty narrow insight into what the expansion holds for us. My only current concern with this is that if it’s not balanced correctly, we’re going to have too much spirit/hit and end up losing other stats. I’m assuming that the devs are taking this into consideration and will attempt to balance all of our gear and talents around this.

On a side note, I’m kind of hoping we’re the ret pallies of Cataclysm. Think back, friends. Do you remember what we called ret paladins back in Burning Crusade? Does the term “lolret” mean anything to you? Ret paladins were ridiculous. If you set you were one, everyone giggled behind your back.

Then Lich King hit, and they went from being LOLRET to OMGRET. They were overpowered, to be sure. The nerfs that came, despite the QQ, were mostly warranted. Ret pallies seem to have finally struck a good balance with the other melee dps classes.

That’s what I would like to see for moonkin in Cataclysm. We know Blizzard’s been listening to us. They heard us hoot woefully when we had to choose between missing our last 2 eclipsed Starfires or being absolutely certain we weren’t about to get Malleable Gooed in the face. They’ve noted the issues we’ve had with stats scaling.

I don’t want to be overpowered, either (at least not for long…lol), but I want to strike the right balance. Considering my spec, I think that’s a fair request.
